Clarisonic, scrub, exfoliate, deep cleanse, scrubbing brush, tooth brush, AHA, glycolic, microdermabrasion, peels, mechanical exfoliation, dead skin! These are all the buzz words at the moment – leading to many of us scrub-a-dub-dub to our detriment! I swear some people are like sanding down wooden floors the way they are exfoliating their skin! Think about it if you sanded your floors every day – you’d have no floors!
However – squeaky skin is actually a bad thing! Yes – I kind you not. I think this premise came from when we were teens and we thought the tighter our face felt the less chance of a spot or getting spots. In actuality the reverse is true. If the skin is stripped of natural oils it signals the skin to OVER produce oil – leading to spots and the classic oil slick!
Yes mother nature has no logic what so ever! So again – by over washing or exfoliating the skin – you can cause over production of oil in teenage skin! As the saying goes too much of anything is a bad thing.
You DO NOT need to exfoliate everyday, or every two days. Once to twice a week is more than sufficient. If you do more, you damage your skin and indeed you are probably addicted to the squeak in your skin! You will make your skin more sensitive, it will get crepy and lead to fine lines, and you will use more moisturizer or serum to balance the skin. It will cost you more in the long run!
Generally most exfoliants or brushes stipulate to use 1-3x a week. Which one is good for you – well you really should ask an expert so that you don’t damage your skin. I personally love an AHA scrub as it contains no grit (which tears at the skin and leaves it redder). The bigger the grain in a scrub the more damage. Use those on your body or to remove tan.
I believe in Microdermabrasion or Peels every change of season! Starting the season FRESH is brilliant! If you are addicted to exfoliation – and love that feeling – use a good cleansing cloth everyday. Honest you will get a good clean feeling with no damage to your precious skin! It is one of the best and cheapest things you can do for healthy glowing skin.
I have at least 10 cloths that I use! My idea of Clarisonic at around €300 or similar – well I think you can get same effect with a soft tooth brush of facial brush from Dermalogica. Invest in good cleanser and serums rather than a brush for your skin!
